Welcome to your journey to purchasing your first massage chair.
Just like purchasing a car, there are many features and terms that you may not fully understand. And understanding massage chair rollers are just one of them.
Are you confused by what they are and what they do? Don’t worry, I was as well when I purchased my first one.
And after doing all of my research, I would now like to share and help you to better understand the basics.
The massage chair comprises several components and features. When working together in concert, they will give you that perfect massage you are looking for.
You will hear terms like rollers, tracks, airbags, heating pads, foot rollers, zero gravity position, and many others.
But before you make that purchase, you will want to get an understanding of these terms so you get the right chair, with the right features, to suit your needs.
One of those terms that we will discuss in this article is the massage chair roller.
Massage Chair Roller Basics
When it comes to the massage chair, the roller assembly is one of the most important things to understand. And any chair that does not have all airbags will have a roller assembly.
It is the roller assembly that gives you those results that you would get from a human therapist.
Roller Track
The first part of this assembly is the roller track. This runs along the back of the chair and guides the roller arm.
Think of the track like you would a railroad track.
Like the railroad track, which guides the train along a path, the massage chair track will guide the roller arm.
Roller Arm
The roller arm moves up and down the roller track, following the contour of your back.
The roller wheels, which are what will provide the massage motions to your back, are attached to the roller arms.

Most chairs will have 2 roller arms, one for each side of the spine. And some models may have 4 roller arms.
One handles the upper part of the back. And the second set handles the lower half of the back down to the hamstrings and buttock.
Some chairs have separate roller systems for the calves. Others have yet another set of rollers for the feet.
Roller Types
There are 2 different types of roller configurations, one being a dual roller and the other being a quad roller.
Dual rollers
Imagine you have two unicycles that were small enough to ride up your back, one riding up the left side and the other up the right side.
This is similar to what dual rollers are. You have one wheel on each arm on each side of the back.
But because all of the force for each side is focused on one roller, manufacturers claim that this gives you a better and more intense massage experience.

Quad Rollers
To understand the difference between dual and quad rollers, now picture two bicycles instead of two unicycles.
With the unicycle, the bike supports one wheel. But on the bicycle, the bike supports two wheels.
You might think that because there are more rollers you would get a more intense massage.
But in fact, this usually gives you a more balanced massage experience. The forces are now distributed across four roller balls as opposed to two.
Massage Chair Roller Dimensions
The roller arm is what protrudes from the track and transfers the force to the roller balls to massage the muscles. The technology that controls how these roller arms move is referred to as dimension.
2D Massage Rollers
In a 2D massage chair the rollers can only move in two dimensions, up and down along the length of the back, and side to side across the width of the back.
And 2D rollers are not able to penetrate the back muscles very deep, so the intensity of massage you receive will be limited.
The way you adjust the feeling of intensity in a 2D massage chair is to increase the speed at which the rollers are moving. The faster the speed, the more total sensation.

If you are someone who likes a more gentle massage and perhaps you are on a tighter budget, a 2D chair may be the option for you.
3D Massage Rollers
A big leap forward in the massage chair industry, 3D massage rollers added a third dimension to the way the rollers could move.

Now instead of just up & down and left & right, the rollers could protrude in & out.
This allows them to move forward and perform deep tissue massage, or retract outward for a less intense massage.
And with many models, the rollers can be manually adjusted as to how deep they push into the muscle.
So this allows you to control the intensity of the massage.
The action of the rollers comes close to mimicking a professional massage therapist’s hands with massage techniques such as kneading, Swedish, and shiatsu.
4D Massage Rollers
Now chairs are being advertised as having 4D massage rollers.
But remember, we have been talking about dimensions, and we live in a three dimensional world.
Now according to Einstein, time was the 4th dimension. So how can there be 4-Dimensional rollers?

A 4th Dimension?
This is more of a marketing term to indicate that these newer chairs have more capability.
This additional capability in the 4D massage chairs is just speed adjustment. It is how fast or slow the rollers move.
But when you move into 4D you have the highest possible level of customization. This will give you the most personal, realistic massage feel.

As an example, think about a human masseuse pushing deep into your tissue and making rotations with their thumbs.
They rely on the sensitivity in their hands to guide them.
Not only the varying the intensity, but also the speed and it changes constantly during the session.
So when you are receiving a massage from an actual masseuse and they hit a knot in your body, what do they do?
They don’t just keep moving at the same speed and intensity because that may not feel too good. Instead, they vary the speed of their fingers and also adjust the pressure they are using.
The 4D difference
In a 4D chair, the chair can actually adjust the speed of the rotation around the knot, giving you a more human-like massage experience.
And it is this change in rhythm, that slow to quick and sometimes quick to slow, that makes the 4D massage rollers so special.
But just be aware that different massage chair companies deliver this change in roller speed using a variety of techniques.
Remember, many 3D massage chairs can manually adjust the speed of the rollers.
But this doesn’t affect the rhythm of the rollers during the massage and is not controlled by the chair technology itself.

Now there have been arguments made that most 3D chairs could be called 4D since most of them are capable of varying their roller speeds.
But when looking for a 4D massage chair, make sure they are not referring to just YOUR ability to control the speed.
In Summary
When it comes to rollers, some will argue if you prefer a deeper more intense massage, you should get a chair with dual rollers.
However, quad roller 3D and 4D massage chairs with roller depth adjustment can offer a very intense massage.
Technology has come a long way, and many chairs in the market offer great massages.
I hope you now have a better understanding of how the rollers work and what the terminology means as you look for that perfect massage chair.
